African Flags Quiz
How many of Africa's 58 flags can you name? Pick the country for each flag and see your score at the end.
Tips for recognizing African flags
Start with color families. Green, yellow and red point to the Pan-African group: Ethiopia, Ghana (with a black star), Senegal (green star), Mali, Guinea, Cameroon and Benin. Then look at the order of the bands, since Mali and Guinea reverse each other.
Red, white and black tricolors in the north suggest Egypt (golden eagle) or Sudan (green triangle), while Libya is red, black and green with a white crescent and star. A crescent and star points to Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania or Morocco's pentagram. Watch for twins: Chad and Romania, and Niger and India. Unusual emblems make the easy ones: a rifle for Mozambique, a shield for Kenya. For a full study guide, see the African flags.
How the quiz works
Each question shows one flag and four answer buttons. Pick one: the right answer is highlighted, and if you missed, the quiz tells you which country it was and links to its page. Your score is shown while you play, and the final result appears after the last flag. There is no timer. The 58 flags come in a new random order every time, so you can replay as often as you like.
How to learn African flags fast
Sort the flags into families before you memorize single ones: green-yellow-red (Pan-African), crescent-and-star, and the red, white and black group in the north. Then learn the pairs that cause mistakes. Mali and Guinea use the same colors in opposite order, and Chad is almost identical to Romania, so remember Chad's deeper indigo blue. Ivory Coast is Ireland's flag mirrored, with orange on the hoist side, and Niger has the same bands as India with an orange disc in place of the blue wheel. Learn five or six flags at a time, replay the quiz, and keep a short list of the ones you miss. You can also browse all African flags before you start.
Frequently asked questions
How can I memorize African flags?
Group them by color and symbol, not alphabetically. Start with the green, yellow and red flags, then the crescent flags, then the ones with emblems. Study the look-alike pairs side by side, such as Mali and Guinea, and replay the quiz so the same flags come back in a new order.
Are there 54 or 57 countries in Africa?
There are 54 UN member states in Africa. This quiz shows 58 flags because it also includes four more entries: Western Sahara, Réunion, Mayotte and Saint Helena. Other lists give different totals depending on how they treat disputed regions and territories.
What are the answers to the African flags quiz?
The quiz shows the answer right after each flag. If you choose wrong, it names the correct country and links to that country's flag page, where you can see the meaning and design details. The final score appears after the last of the 58 flags.
Which African flags look alike?
The best-known pairs are Chad and Romania, Mali and Guinea (same colors, reversed order), and Ivory Coast and Ireland. Ghana and Senegal also share green, yellow and red but differ in star color: Ghana's star is black, Senegal's is green.
Which African flags are green, yellow and red?
Many African flags use green, yellow and red, including Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Cameroon and Benin. Tell them apart by layout and symbol: Ghana has a black star, Senegal a green star, Cameroon a yellow star, and Mali and Guinea reverse each other's bands.
