Grenada flag meaning and symbolism

Most elements of the flag have a commonly given meaning:

  • Red stands for harmony, unity, courage and vitality.
  • Yellow stands for the sun and for the warmth and wisdom of Grenadians.
  • Green stands for vegetation and the agriculture of the island.
  • The seven stars stand for the parishes: the six stars on the red border represent six parishes, and the star on the central disc stands for the sister islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, counted as the seventh parish.
  • The nutmeg shows that Grenada is known as the "Isle of Spice". Grenada is the second-largest producer of nutmeg in the world, after Indonesia, and is nicknamed the "Spice Island".

Red, yellow and green also appear on many flags of Africa and the Caribbean. Grenada is a Caribbean country, not an African one.

History of the Grenada flag

Sovereignty over Grenada changed hands between the French and the British throughout the 18th century, until the Peace of Paris in 1783 saw France permanently give the island to the United Kingdom. It became a crown colony in 1877.

Grenada became an associated state of the United Kingdom on 3 March 1967 and adopted a temporary flag: a blue, yellow and green horizontal tricolor with a nutmeg in the center. The current flag was designed by Anthony C. George, a Grenadian from Soubise in Saint Andrew Parish. It was hoisted at midnight on 7 February 1974, the day Grenada became independent, and adopted by the government the same day. The nutmeg was the one feature kept from the earlier flag.

The flag has remained the same since independence. Grenada is a member of the Commonwealth. Compare it with other flags in the region on the flags of North America page.
