New Zealand flag emoji FAQ
What is ๐ณ๐ฟ?
It is New Zealand.
How do I tell it from Australia ๐ฆ๐บ?
Both are blue with a Union Jack. New Zealand has four red stars with white edges, and Australia has white stars, including a large seven-pointed one.
Is it the same as ๐ฐ๐ฟ?
No. ๐ฐ๐ฟ is Kazakhstan, a light blue flag with a sun and an eagle.
When was the current New Zealand flag adopted?
It was designed in 1869 for use on the colony's ships, soon became the national flag, and received statutory recognition through the New Zealand Ensign Act in 1902. The ๐ณ๐ฟ emoji shows this blue ensign with the Union Jack and four red Southern Cross stars. See the New Zealand flag page.
Did New Zealand vote on changing its flag?
Yes. In 2016 a two-stage referendum took place, and in the final vote on 24 March 2016 about 57% chose to keep the existing flag over a black, white and blue design with a silver fern. The ๐ณ๐ฟ emoji therefore still shows the 1869 ensign.
Which other flag emojis show the Southern Cross?
Besides New Zealand, the Southern Cross appears on the flags of Australia ๐ฆ๐บ, Papua New Guinea ๐ต๐ฌ and Samoa ๐ผ๐ธ. The New Zealand version has four red stars outlined in white, while the others use white stars. Check each page to compare the exact star layouts.
