Which countries have orange and green flags?

  • Ireland (Europe): three vertical stripes of green, white and orange, with green at the hoist.
  • Ivory Coast (Africa): the same stripes in reverse, orange at the hoist and green at the fly.
  • India (Asia): horizontal saffron, white and green with a navy blue 24-spoke wheel in the center.
  • Niger: horizontal orange, white and green with an orange disc in the middle of the white band.
  • Zambia: a green field with a small orange eagle and three vertical stripes of red, black and orange in the lower right.

The common mix-ups are easy to solve. Ireland and Ivory Coast use the same vertical stripes in opposite order. India and Niger have the same horizontal order, but India has a blue wheel and Niger has an orange circle. Zambia is the only one with a bird.

Why do orange and green appear together?

Orange and green rarely meet on flags, and each of these pairings comes from a different story.

Ireland's green is tied to the Gaelic and Catholic tradition and its orange to the Protestant followers of William of Orange. The white between them stands for peace. The tricolour was introduced by the Young Irelanders in 1848 and came to be regarded as the national flag after the 1916 Easter Rising.

Ivory Coast adopted its tricolor in 1959. Orange stands for the northern savanna, and green for the southern forests, with white for peace. Niger's colors work in the same way: orange for the Sahara in the north, white for the Sahel and green for the fertile south, with the disc thought to stand for the sun. Official sources have not confirmed these readings.

India's saffron stands for courage and sacrifice, white for truth and peace, and green for faith and growth. Zambia's orange stripe stands for the country's copper and mineral wealth.
