Iraq flag emoji FAQ
What is ๐ฎ๐ถ?
It is Iraq, in the Middle East, with Baghdad as its capital.
What country is ๐ฐ๐ผ?
That is Kuwait. Iraq is ๐ฎ๐ถ.
Which flags look like Iraq's?
Egypt ๐ช๐ฌ and Yemen ๐พ๐ช use the same colors. Iraq's has green script, Egypt's has an eagle, and Yemen's has no emblem.
When was the current Iraq flag adopted?
The current version was adopted on 22 January 2008. It keeps the red, white and black tricolour used since 31 July 1963, writes the takbir in dark green Kufic script and removes the three green stars. It was meant as a temporary compromise but has remained official.
Why does the Iraq flag use red, white and black?
The red, white and black stripes come from the Arab Liberation Flag, first used by Gamal Abdel Nasser during the Egyptian Revolution. Iraqi flags since the 1958 coup have all used the pan-Arab colors green, black, white and red, so the ๐ฎ๐ถ emoji shares colors with several Arab flags.
Does the ๐ฎ๐ถ emoji show the old Iraq flag?
No. It shows the current flag with the green Arabic script on the white stripe. Older versions had three green stars, and the original 1921 flag was a black, white and green design with a red triangle, so those look quite different from the emoji.
